Barbara Hubbard (play video)Barbara Johnston Hubbard grew up in Arkansas but adopted New Mexico as her home state in 1955 when she took a job teaching biology at Las Cruces High School. She married Peirce Hubbard in 1959. In 1968, when Peirce was president of the Aggie Booster Club, Athletic Director Lou Henson asked Barbara to be business manager of the new Pan American Center. With men’s basketball the only event in the new facility, Barbara suggested renting it out to raise money. Barbara and her team of student workers were soon bringing in major groups to perform. Inspired by her dedication to her students, Bob Hope nicknamed her Mother Hubbard in the early 1970s. Retired in name only, Mother Hubbard continues to work as executive director of the American Collegiate Talent Showcase to help young people gain a foot in the door of the entertainment industry.Content Partner: New Mexico State University |
